A sintered powder metal part is surface densified by surface heating followed by repressing. Surface heating is preferably done to a temperature which is just below the critical temperature where the steel alloy material of the part transforms from a ferritic to an austenitic microstructure. Repressing is in a die set which is smaller than the part by 10 % of the surface heated depth. The hot skin is compressed and densified between the die and the cooler, and therefore less malleable core of the part. Following surface densification, the part may be resintered and/or heat treated.

La présente invention concerne une pièce frittée à base de poudres métalliques qui est densifiée en surface par chauffage de surface suivi d'une recompression. Le chauffage de surface s'effectue, de préférence, à une température située juste au-dessous de la température critique à laquelle le matériau à base d'alliage d'acier de la pièce passe d'une microstructure ferritique à une microstructure austénitique. La recompression s'effectue dans un ensemble à matrice qui est plus petit que la pièce d'une valeur égale aux 10 % de la profondeur de la surface chauffée. L'enveloppe chauffée est compressée et densifiée entre la matrice et le noyau plus froid et, par conséquent, moins malléable de la pièce. Après la densification de la surface, la pièce peut être à nouveau frittée et/ou traitée à chaud.
