An artificial airway device (20) for use in unconscious patients comprises a laryngo-pharyngeal mask (52) including a roughly elliptical expandable masking ring (55). The expandable mask sealingly surrounding the laryngeal inlet (50) when expanded to obstruct communication between the laryngeal inlet and oesophagus (37). One or more airway tubes (125, 127) connected to the mask provide for fluid flow to a portion of the mask facing the laryngeal inlet when the mask sealingly surrounds the laryngeal inlet. A gastro-tube (75) connected to the mask is bonded along most of its length to the airway tube(s) and provides a fluid flow-path to the surface of the mask facing the oesophagus when the mask sealingly surrounds the laryngeal inlet. The cross-section area of the gastro-tube is at least as great as that of the airway tube(s). The distal end of the gastro tube passes through the masking ring at its narrower distal region (62) where, when installed in a patient, it abuts the oesophagus; and the distal portion (80) of the gastro-tube (75) flattens when the mask is deflated to facilitate smooth passage behind the larynx during insertion through the patient's airway (22).

Ce dispositif constituant des voies respiratoires artificielles (20), à utiliser avec un patient inconscient, comporte un masque laryngo-pharyngé (52) pourvu d'une bague de masquage (55) susceptible de se dilater de manière sensiblement elliptique. Ce masque dilatable entoure de façon hermétique l'entrée du larynx et l'oesophage (37). Un ou plusieurs tubes constituant des passages d'air (125, 127), reliés au masque, assurent un passage des fluides vers une partie du masque faisant face à l'entrée du larynx lorsque le masque entoure de façon hermétique cette entrée du larynx. Un tube gastrique, (75) relié au masque, est collé, sur la majeure partie de sa longueur, au(x) tube(s) permettant le passage de l'air, et permet un passage de fluides à la surface du masque faisant face à l'oesophage lorsque le masque entoure de façon hermétique l'entrée du larynx. La surface de la section transversale du tube gastrique est au moins aussi importante que celle du ou des tubes(s) permettant le passage de l'air. L'extrémité distale du tube gastrique traverse la bague de masquage au niveau de sa région distale rétrécie (62) où, une fois introduite dans le corps du patient, elle vient buter contre l'oesophage. Cette extrémité distale (80) du tube gastrique (75) s'aplatit lorsque le masque est dégonflé afin de constituer un passage facile en arrière du larynx lors de l'introduction dans les voies respiratoires (22) du patient.
