The present invention provides methods for expanding human umbilical cord blood stem cells and methods for stimulating growth factor production by cord blood stem cells using an in vitro cell culture system comprising a lithium salt. The present invention also provides in vivo methods for enhancing the survival and growth of transplanted cord blood stem cells by treating the cells with a lithium salt prior to transplantation. In vivo methods for reducing rejection of transplanted cord blood stem cells by administering a lithium salt after transplantation are also provided.

La présente invention concerne des méthodes permettant de réaliser une expansion des cellules souches issues du sang de cordon ombilical et des méthodes permettant de stimuler la production du facteur de croissance par des cellules souches issues du sang de cordon ombilical à l'aide d'un système de culture cellulaire in vitro comprenant un sel de lithium. La présente invention concerne également des méthodes in vivo permettant d'améliorer la survie et la croissance de cellules souches issues du sang de cordon ombilical transplantées, consistant à traiter les cellules à l'aide d'un sel de lithium avant leur transplantation. L'invention concerne également des méthodes in vivo permettant de réduire le rejet de cellules souches issues du sang de cordon ombilical transplantées, consistant à administrer un sel de lithium après la transplantation.
