A vibrating probe for detecting a threshold level of solids within a vessel consists of an ultrasonic acoustic transducer assembly having a resonant frequency, the assembly being supported within the vessel and including a coupling member to couple the transducer acoustically to the solids at the threshold level, a transmitter for generating repeated bursts of high-frequency electrical energy and applying them to the transducer, the bursts being of sufficient amplitude to render the assembly self cleaning of adherent solids, a circuit for measuring the amplitude of ringing of the transducer after cessation of each burst, and a circuit for comparing the amplitude of such ringing at a predetermined interval after a burst with predetermined threshold level. Both the predetermined interval and the threshold level may be selectable.

Sonde vibrante permettant de détecter un niveau inférieur de solides à l'intérieur d'un récipient. Cet appareil est constitué d'un ensemble de transducteur ultrasonique ayant une fréquence de résonance : il est placé sur un support à l'intérieur du récipient et présente un élément de fixation conçu pour relier acoustiquement le transducteur aux solides au niveau inférieur. Cette sonde comprend également les éléments suivants : un émetteur, qui produit à répétition des impulsions d'énergie électrique haute fréquence et les applique au transducteur, ces impulsions étant d'une amplitude suffisante pour empêcher tout solide d'adhérer à l'ensemble; un circuit conçu pour mesurer l'amplitude de résonance du transducteur après chaque impulsion; et un circuit servant à comparer après une durée prédéterminée l'amplitude d'une telle résonance à un niveau inférieur prédéterminé. La durée prédéterminée et le niveau inférieur peuvent être sélectionnés.
