An in-line roller skate and boot assembly with which the wheel apparatus can be quickly removed in situations where walking would be more suitable than skating. The boot is manufactured to provide for excellent ankle support and good traction on road surfaces when the wheel apparatus is not attached. The rigid sole of the boot is specially moulded to accept the wheel assembly with little lateral movement or shifting. The wheels can be quickly attached by hooking the wheel assembly onto the front of the boot and engaging a lever to secure it at the rear. Removing the in-line wheel assembly involves pulling down the lever and then unhooking the wheel assembly at the toe.
