- 114 - ABSTRACT The size of lighting devices (11, 13) and the uniform-luminance characteristics thereof are stored in a data base in advance. Shape features such as the size of an object and the depth and width of a groove formed in the object, as well as field-of-view information necessary in order to illuminate the object, are entered from an input unit (51). On the basis of the entered information and data-base information, conditions for photographing the object appropriately, such as conditions for illuminating the object so that a groove formed in the object will appear dark while other surface portions of the object appear uniformly bright, are calculated by a decision unit (54, 55). For example, the optimum height and optimum angle of the lighting device are derived and these are displayed on a display unit (41).
