A spacer for insulated glass assembly and the like. A spacer is formed from a spacer core, having side faces which face the substrates, with at least one elongate recess extending longitudinally within at least one of the side faces. A sealant material covers the side faces to engage the substrates, with the sealant material filling the recess. A tongue and groove arrangement is formed between the core and sealant to prevent separation of the sealant from the core. A front face of the core may include a vapor barrier. Additional sealing capabilities may be provided by a second sealant material joined to the first sealant, with the vapor barrier at least partially embedded within the second sealant.
