2072603 9205514 PCTABS00011 The portable data scanner apparatus (1) is a self-contained unit with no external cabling and operates to scan barcodes under adverse scanning conditions, such as bright sunlight, in the presence of glare and reflections and is capable of scanning a barcode through glass, plastic, and other clear materials. The scanner (1) incorporates a keyboard (33) and a display (35) which permit the operator to control the aiming period and the decoding process. A laser light source beam is focused to provide a spot size substantially the same size as the smallest barcode feature to reduce received signal noise. A scanning algorithm which searches for start and stop characters is employed to decode barcode data.
