A surveillance system is used for monitoring an area with a video camera coupled to a video recorder. A passive infrared detector is used for detecting the presence of a person in the area being monitored. A signal from the detector is used to start the recorder. The recorder remains on as long as a person remains in the area. A timer circuit stops the recording when the monitored area has returned to a normal condition. This system does not require the recorder to be in a constant record mode and thus allows the use of conventional video recorders an relatively short tapes while providing a full record of activity in the area monitored.
