The invention relates to a method and apparatus for determining the color and/or composition of a material. A sample of the material is illuminated with at least three illumination bands singly or in combination, said illumination bands collectively substantially spanning at least the visible range. The light reflected or transmitted by the sample is measured with at least four light detector elements responsive to light in wavelength bands which substantially span the visible range when the sample is illuminated. The measured reflected or transmitted light is compared to the light reflected or transmitted by a reference material of known apparent emissivity or transmissivity and the apparent emissivity or transmissivity of the sample is calculated therefrom.

La présente invention concerne un procédé et un appareil permettant de déterminer la couleur et/ou la composition d'un matériau. On illumine un échantillon du matériau à l'aide d'au moins trois bandes d'éclairement, individuellement ou combinées les unes aux autres, lesdites bandes d'éclairement couvrant collectivement, dans une large mesure, au moins la gamme visible. On mesure la lumière réfléchie ou transmise par l'échantillon à l'aide d'au moins quatre éléments détecteurs de lumière sensibles à la lumière dans des bandes de longueur d'ondes qui couvrent dans une large mesure la gamme visible lorsque l'échantillon est éclairé. On compare la lumière réfléchie ou transmise mesurée à la lumière réfléchie ou transmise par un matériau de référence d'émissivité ou de transmissivité apparente connue et on calcule sur cette base l'émissivité ou la transmissivité apparente de l'échantillon.
