The invention relates to the use of a genomic gene modification in the gene for the G.alpha.11 subunit of human G--proteins which subunit is encoded by the gene GA11, for the prognosis of disease risks, disease developments and the response to disease therapies by pharmacological and non--pharmacological measures and for predicting undesired drug effects. The invention relates moreover to the provision of individual gene modifications and haplotypes by means of which further gene modifications suitable for use for the above--mentioned purposes can be detected and validated. Such gene modifications may consists of a G(-659)C polymorphism being detected in the promoter of the gene. The gene modifications can be detected individually or in any desired combination by means of processes familiar to the expert.
