The invention described herein pertains to an air-conditioning unit contained in a single and compact enclosure, the same unit being able to carry out the functions of a heat pump, a de-humidifier, and an air exchanger with energy recovery capability. The unit is comprised of a compressor, two heat exchangers (either one of which has to function as both condenser or evaporator), a refrigerant flow change-over valve, one air flow change-over valve, one outdoor air shut-off mechanism integrated with a second air change- over valve, and two fan assemblies. By positioning a center-pivoting air valve as a separation between the two heat exchangers, and placing the three items transversely to the length of the unit, indoor air can be selectively drawn across either one of the heat exchangers, while at the same time outside air is drawn across the other heat exchanger. This construction allows the unit to function as a heat pump or as a fresh air exchanger with energy recovery capability, depending on the positioning of the air valve. A refrigerant flow change-over valve will select which task (condensing or evaporating) each of the heat exchangers has to carry out. By closing off access to the outside with an additional shutter type shut-off mechanism, the air flow through the unit is routed to the central inside section of the cabinet and the de-humidifying mode is established. Thus the modes of heating, cooling, air exchange with heating or cooling capability (energy recovery), and de-humidifying can be obtained with this type of apparatus. The appliance can be produced as a compact unit with the smaller capacity sizes capable of being installed in either a window or wall opening, while the larger capacity units can be positioned either outdoors or in a basement and ducted to a standard duct system.
