A thin film phosphor for an electroluminescent device, in which the phosphor is selected from the group consisting of thioaluminates, thiogallates and thioindates having at least one cation selected from elements of Groups IIA and IIB of the Periodic Table of Elements. The phosphor is activated by a rare earth metal and co-activated with gadolinium. The phosphor provides improved luminance. An electroluminescent device comprising the thin film phosphor on a substrate is also described. Further aspects provide an electroluminescent device in which the thin film phosphor is adjacent to a thin film of zinc sulphide, preferably sandwiched between thin films of zinc sulphide.

La présente invention concerne une mince couche de phosphore destinée à un dispositif électroluminescent, dans lequel le phosphore est sélectionné dans le groupe comprenant thioaluminates, thiogallates et thioindates présentant au moins un cation sélectionné dans des éléments des groupes IIA et IIB du tableau périodique des éléments. Le phosphore est activé par un lanthanide et co-activé avec du gadolinium. Le phosphore permet d'obtenir une luminance améliorée. L'invention concerne également un dispositif électroluminescent comprenant la mince couche de phosphore déposée sur un substrat. D'autres modes de réalisation concernent un dispositif électroluminescent dans lequel la mince couche de phosphore est adjacente à une mince couche de sulfure de zinc, de préférence comprise entre de minces couches de sulfure de zinc.
