A gypsum formulation, typically for producing a gypsum building board, is produced by adding to an aqueous gypsum slurry containing a water swellable clay, acomb- based copolymer fluidiser and a basic water-soluble polymer having pref-erential affinity for clay, and allowing a layer of theaqueous gypsum slurry to set.
