ABSTRACT A system for tracking vehicles within a confined area such as a parking garage, mine tunnel or warehouse. The vehicle is equipped with a transmitter which emits an infrared beacon carrying digital information respecting the identity of the vehicle. Strategically located within the confined area are arrays of receivers adapted to respond to the infrared beacon and to generate independent information regarding receiver identity in addition to receiving information with respect to the transmitter identity. The combined information is processed by the system to generate reports regarding the location of each vehicle within the confined area.
