A self hooking ice fishing rig includes a base frame, a vertical brace operatively mounted proximal a forward end of the base frame, a catch element disposed proximal a free end of the vertical brace, and a rod having a base end and an line end operatively mountable proximal a rearward end of the base frame. The rod is resiliently bendable between a released position and a set position. In the released position, the rod extends freely upward from the base frame at two acute orthogonal angles with respect to the base frame. In the set position, the catch element operatively engages the rod to thereby restrain the tip end of the rod proximal the vertical brace, against the resilient force of the rod.
