ABSTRACT A torque meter comprises a shaft having a section of reduced diameter, a segmented sleeve fixed to the shaft at both ends of the reduced diameter section to resist rotational and axial displacement, and an armature carried by a lug connected to the sleeve segments. When, during operation, the sleeve ends move relatively towards each other the armature is axially displaced and changes an electric and/or magnetic field. The change in the field is detected and is indicative of the applied torque.
