ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Provided is a use for preventing or treating neuronotoxic damage in a human or animal subject, of an anti- neuronotoxic damage effective amount of the methyl ester of GM1 ganglioside. Such damage can be associated with ischemia, hypoxia, trauma and compression, metabolic dysfunction, epilepsy, neurodegenerative disease, chronic pain, and cerebral infarct. Also provided is a pharmaceutical composition, comprising the methyl ester of GM1 ganglioside and a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient, vector, or diluent.
