Systems and methods are presented for improving the quality of an image as perceived by the Human Vision System by smoothing block artifacts in an image. In one embodiment, smoothing is accomplished by identifying target pixels to be smoothed and then replacing the pixel values of the target pixels with values derived from statistically similar neighboring pixels. The statistically similar neighboring pixels are chosen based on specific measurement criteria from within a region identified to contain such neighbors.

Des systèmes et des procédés sont présentés qui permettent daméliorer la qualité dune image telle quelle est perçue par le système de vision humaine en lissant les artefacts de bloc dune image. Dans un mode de réalisation, un lissage est accompli en identifiant les pixels cible qui doivent être lissés, puis en remplaçant les valeurs de pixel des pixels cible par des valeurs dérivées à partir de pixels voisins statistiquement similaires. Les pixels voisins statistiquement similaires sont choisis selon des critères de mesure spécifiques à lintérieur dune région identifiée comme contenant de tels voisins.
