A software license management system for a computer network is disclosed that is capable of operating in a disconnected or intermittently connected mode. The system is capable of borrowing software licenses from computer nodes (100, 200, 300) in one of three modes. The three modes include a fault tolerance mode, a service licensing mode, and a normal online mode. When network instability occurs, an executive logic layer software module (740) consults a set of rules to determine whether to automatically initiate short term software license borrowing using the fault tolerance mode or using the service licensing mode. The automatic short term software license borrowing continues as long as needed and then the normal online mode of software license borrowing is resumed.

L'invention concerne un système de gestion de licences de logiciel destiné à un réseau informatique pouvant fonctionner en mode déconnecté ou en mode connecté par intermittence. Ce système permet d'emprunter des licences de logiciel à des nuds informatiques (100, 200, 300) dans l'un des trois modes. Les trois modes sont: un mode de tolérance aux pannes, un mode d'octroi de licence de service, et un mode en ligne normal. Lorsque survient une instabilité de réseau, un module superviseur de logiciel de couche logique (740) consulte un ensemble de règles afin de déterminer s'il faut ou non amorcer de façon automatique un emprunt de licence de logiciel à court terme au moyen du mode de tolérance aux pannes ou du mode d'octroi de licence de service. L'emprunt automatique de licence de logiciel à court terme continue aussi longtemps que nécessaire, puis l'emprunt de licence de logiciel reprend le mode en ligne normal.
