The present invention relates to an automatic sampler for air adjacent to the sampler, or its inlet port, which will either analyze the sample, or protect the sample until it can be analyzed by forensic specialists, by use of an event detection module, a sample suction device, a filter and sample holding chamber, coordinating electrical devices, analytical mechanisms, and one or more heat protection mechanisms. Only materials availableafter a fire are now sampled for forensic analysis; this severely limits the possible inferences. There can only be certainty in the determination of the source of anunwitnessed fire, if this device and process are used.
