A water heater includes a water-tight tank, a cold water in the tank inlet defining a water flow path and a hot water outlet defining a water flow path. A flapper valve member including a ring section is fixed relative to one of the water inlet and water outlet. A unitary flapper section extends from the ring section and has a permanently biased central rest position extending at least partially across the water flow path of the one of the water inlet and the water outlet. The flapper valve member may be secured within a spud mounted to the tank around the one of the water inlet and water outlet. Alternatively, a bushing is fixed relative to the one of the water inlet and water outlet, through which an associated water flow path flows. The ring section extends around a portion of the bushing to support the flapper valve member with respect to the bushing. The flapper section moves out of the water flow path in response to water flow and moves into the water flow path in the absence of water flow to restrict the flow of convection currents.
