A method of converting an existing locomotive compressed air system having no aftercooler to one having an aftercooler. The method includes the steps of removing at least a portion of a pipe connecting an existing air compressor to elongated piping located on the locomotive for cooling compressed air supplied by the compressor and substituting therefor an aftercooler unit adapted to be mounted in the locomotive and connected between such existing air compressor and an existing pipe leading to a reservoir of compressed air located on the locomotive.
