Method of attaching a functional element (2, 27, 102, 102a, 102b) to a plastically deformable flat material (1, 29, 101) or workpiece, wherein the functional element (2, 27, 102, 102a, 102b), at a bearing surface (6, 28, 105.1), has a riveting collar (7, 108) which projects beyond this surface and is formed by a hollow or tubular section, wherein a dome-like section (10, 10a, 10b, 10c, 104) is formed in a joining region in the flat material (1) by plastic deformation and projects with its base (11, 104.1) beyond the plane of the flat material (1) surrounding this section and has a joining opening (9, 103) at this base, and wherein the attaching of the functional element (2, 27, 102, 102a, 102b) to the flat material (1) is effected in a joining and riveting operation by inserting the riveting collar (7, 108) into the joining opening (9, 103) and by plastic deformation of this riveting collar (7, 108) in such a way that the base (11, 104.1) is accommodated in a region of the base surrounding the joining opening (9, 103) between the deformed riveting collar (7.1, 108.1) and the bearing surface or end face (6, 28, 105.1) of the functional element (2, 27, 102, 102a, 102b), wherein the functional element (2, 27, 102, 102a, 102b) is anchored to the marginal region surrounding the joining opening (9, 103) without reducing the diameter of the joining opening (9, 103). A connection and connecting elements are also claimed.
