The present invention pertains to an ice detector (5) particularly adapted to detect the present of water droplets capable of forming supercooled large droplet ("SLD") icing on aircraft surfaces. The invention takes advantage of boundary layer flow patterns adjacent to the detector (5), and their effect on water droplets, to provide a signal indicative of SLD icing conditions when they exist. The detector (5) is also capable of distinguishing between the presence of water droplets that cause traditional cloud icing and SLD icing.

L'invention concerne un détecteur de givre (5), spécifiquement conçu pour détecter la présence de gouttelettes d'eau pouvant former du givre par le biais de grosses gouttelettes superfondues (SLD) sur des surfaces d'un aéronef. L'invention tire profit des motifs d'écoulement de couche limitrophe, adjacents au détecteur (5), et de leur effet sur les gouttelettes d'eau, pour émettre un signal indiquant des conditions de givre SLD, lorsque celles-ci se présentent. Le détecteur (5) peut également effectuer une distinction entre la présence de gouttelettes d'eau provoquant un givre classique et un givre SLD.
