The present invention relates to a wireless communication system in which a base station selects its own operating channel from a multiplicity of permissible channels. One or more other channels in addition to the operating channel are selected as backup channels. The base station provides information on the selection of backup channels with remotes of the base station. When the base station is required to change its operating channel, the base station moves to the first backup channel, with the second backup channel becoming the new first backup, and so on. The selection of both operating and backup channels are based on a single numeric interference score for each permissible operating channel. The base station contacts a central administration facility when the number of frequencies that meet a given selection criterion falls below a predetermined threshold.
