A method and system for detecting solubilized compounds containing vicinal hydroxyl groups, in which a solution of inter- est is exposed to a dye compound whose optical properties undergo predictable change in relation to the concentration of polyhy- droxyl species. The dye compound contains a functional binding moiety selected from the group consisting of boronic acid, boro- nate ion, arsenious acid, arsenite ion, telluric acid, tellurate ion, germanic acid and germanate ion.
