Mailing machine including a controller, a printer module including a connector, a print head controller for producing print data signals necessary to print a postal indicia on an envelope and a replaceable print head cartridge having a plurality of print elements which are selectively energizable in response to the print data signals. The print head cartridge is detachably mounted to the connector. The controller in operative communication with the printer module for: determining if a valid print head cartridge is installed; and if a valid print head cartridge is not installed, preventing the print data signalsfrom reaching the connector.

La présente invention vise une machine de traitement du courrier qui se compose d'une unité de contrôle, d'un module d'imprimante doté d'un connecteur, d'un dispositif de commande de la tête d'impression qui génère les signaux des données à imprimer nécessaires à l'impression d'une empreinte d'affranchissement sur une enveloppe et d'une tête d'impression amovible munie d'une série d'éléments d'impression pouvant être mis sous tension séparément en réponse aux signaux des données à imprimer. La cartouche de la tête d'impression est montée de façon amovible sur le connecteur. L'unité de contrôle communique de façon fonctionnelle avec le module d'imprimante pour déterminer si une cartouche de tête d'impression valide est en place et pour intercepter, si ce n'est pas le cas, les signaux des données à imprimer avant leur transmission au connecteur.
