A zirconia-based catalyst or catalyst precursor is prepared by a process comprising mulling a mixture of zirconia and/or a zirconia precursor and a solvent, which mixture has a solids content of from 20 to 60% by weight, and extruding the mixture. The zirconia precursor is preferably zirconium hydroxide. The resulting extrudates may be impregnated with a suitable catalytically active element, preferably cobalt. The cobalt-containing catalyst produced may be used in a process for the preparation of hydrocarbons from carbon monoxide and hydrogen.
