A process is provided herein for the preparation of an indigo compound. The process includes reacting a corresponding indole compound having no substituent at the 2- and 3-positions with a percarboxylic acid in the presence of an alcohol solvent, or by reacting with heating over 60°C in the presence of an aprotic solvent.
