The invention concerns substituted 2-phenylpyridines of formula (I), in which: n = 0, 1; R1, R3 and R4 represent H, OH, SH, NO2, NH2, CN, COOH, CONH2, halogen, alkyl, alkyl halide, alkoxy, alkoxy halide, alkyl amino, dialkyl amino, alkyl thio, alkyl thio halide, alkoxy carbonyl, amino carbonyl, alkylamino carbonyl, dialkylamino carbonyl; R2 represents H, OH, SH, NO2, NH2, CN, halogen, alkyl, alkyl halide, alkoxy, alkoxy halide, alkylthio, alkylthio halide, alkyl sulphinyl, alkyl sulphinyl halide, alkylsulphonyl, alkylsulphonyl halide; R5 represents H, CN or halogen; R6, R13 represent H or halogen; X represents -CH2- or -CO-; R7, R8, R9, R10 represent H, NO2, CN, halogen, alkyl, alkyl halide, alkoxy, alkoxy halide; R11 represents H, OH, NO2, NH2, NHOH, CN, CHO, COOH, COCL, CONH2, 1-pyrrolidinyl carbonyl, 1- piperidinyl carbonyl, 4-morpholinyl carbonyl, 2-hydroxy carbonyl-pyrrolidine-1- yl-carbonyl, halogen or various organic groups; R12 represents H, NO2, NH2, NHOH, alkylsulphonyl amino, dialkylsulphonyl amino, alkylsulphonyl amino halide, alkoxy carbonyl-alkyl halide, alkoxycarbonyl-alkenyl halide. The invention also concerns salts of these compounds. Excluded are variants of formula (I) in which R5, R7, R11 and R13 all represent hydrogen or R7 and R8 or R10 and R11 represent fluorine. The said compounds can be used as herbicides and for drying out and defoliating plants.
