Apparatus and method for processing medical waste comprising an elongate, cylindrically configured pressure vessel (A) having an inlet (30), and a closure member (40) therefor. An elongate cylindrical drum (D) is mounted in the vessel (A) for being driven in rotation in either direction. The drum (D) is inclined at an angle to the horizontal, with its inlet (50) elevated. A helically configured member (80) is disposed around the drum interior, such that the helical member (80) moves waste material away from the drum inlet (50) during rotation in a first direction, whereas during opposite rotation, the helical member (80) moves waste toward the inlet (50). The helical member (80) is utilized in conjunction with lifting paddles (70) that accomplish a thorough mixing of the waste. Moisture and heat, typically using steam (90), are utilized to aid waste processing. Discharge of the fully processed waste material is effected during drum rotation in the second rotative direction.
L'invention porte sur un appareil et une méthode de traitement des déchets médicaux comportant un contenant sous pression (A) allongé et cylindrique qui présente une entrée (30) et un élément de fermeture (40) de l'entrée. Un fût cylindrique allongé (D) est monté sur le contenant (A) de façon à tourner dans chaque sens. Le fût (D) est incliné par rapport à l'horizontale, de sorte que l'entrée (50) est surélevée. Un élément hélicoïdal (80) est placé autour du fût, sur sa surface interne, de sorte qu'il éloigne les déchets de l'entrée (50) pendant la rotation dans un premier sens, et qu'il les rapproche de l'entrée du fût (50) pendant la rotation opposée.
