Abstract of the Disclosure An apparatus for retreading tires with a precured and premolded tire tread material comprises a multi-part rigid shell for holding a tire and a precured tread assembly, the shell defining a sealed chamber around the tread of the assembly. The shell has a base, with a flat circular portion formed thereon and adapted to support a tire and precured tread assembly, an annular ring member extending upwardly from the circular portion of said base, and a cover having a flat circular portion mounted on the annular ring member and secured to said annular ring and said base by upwardly extending securing means. The base, ring, and cover define the sealed chamber around the tread portion of the assembly. A thin flexible envelope covers the assembly from sidewall to sidewall around its outer perimeter. Sealing means provides a seal between the flexible envelope and the base and cover means at each of the sidewalls of the assembly. The sealing means cooperates with the base and cover and the exterior surface of the envelope to provide a fluid tight seal for the chamber. Fluid inlet and exhaust means are provided for pres- surizing and heating the fluid within the annular chamber. An inflatable means is mounted for inflation within the assembly to a pressure greater than the pressure in the annular chamber and laterally distends the sidewalls of the assembly to urge them into contact with the sealing means. Means mounted between the assembly and the envelope evacuate air trapped between the surface of the tire and precured tread assembly and the thin flexible envelope.
