External fans rather than internal ones are needed for providing the air circulation required for cooling a slowly running electric machine, e.g. a bulb turbine generator. The invention relates to a device and a method for cooling an electric machine (1) by means of an external fan (10). In said device and method, the cooling apparatus (12) is disposed on the pressure side or the suction side of the fan (10) while the rotor (3) and the stator (4) are arranged on the suction side of the fan (10).
