The invention provides a method for the oxidation of carbohydrates with in an aqueous medium, with which method a less than equivalent amount (for example 10 mol.%) of periodate is used and the periodate is regenerated during the reaction in a separate reaction chamber. The periodate is preferably regenerated electrochemically. The oxidation leads to dialdehyde carbohydrates in which advantageously 30-85 % of the available groups are oxidised to dialdehyde groups.

Selon le procédé, on utilise une quantité moins qu'équivalente (par exemple 10 % molaire) de périodate, et le périodate est régénéré au cours de la réaction dans une chambre réactionnelle indépendante. De préférence, le périodate est régénéré par voie électrochimique. L'oxydation produit des glucides dialdéhydiques dans lesquels 30 à 85 % des groupes disponibles sont oxydés de manière à former des groupes dialdéhydes.
