The mass of a tire can be reduced by the use of a belt package having a combination of a steel reinforced inner (first) belt ply and an aromatic polyamide reinforced outer (second) belt ply. The belt plies are to be made without the cost of having folded belts or any other non-standard construction features. The improved endurance of the tire of this invention is assured by the physical features of the individual belt plies as well as required physical relationships between belt plies. The breaking strength, the spacing and the angle with respect to the tire's mid-plane for the reinforcing members in each belt ply are defined. The strength per unit width of the aromatic polyamide reinforced second belt ply is made to be within 30 percent greater than the strength per unit width of the steel reinforced first belt ply to improve tire endurance. A functional relationship using the bending stiffness values of each belt ply and the composite belt package shear stiffness is also defined to improve tire endurance. The difference between the bending stiffness values for each belt ply about a lateral y-axis (BY1- BY2) as well as the composite shear stiffness with respect to the z-axis (CGZ) were found to correlate very well with high impact endurance values. The tire of this invention uses angles of the aromatic polyamide reinforcing members from the mid-plane greater than the angles of the steel reinforcing members from the same mid-plane by 1 to 8 degrees. Preferably the angle of the aromatic polyamide reinforcing members is 3 degrees larger than the angle of the steel reinforcing members from the mid-plane.
