The present invention relates to an actuating apparatus which may be arranged to provide an actuating rotation or force on demand. The actuating apparatus comprises a resilient member having a plurality of co-acting elements such as a plurality of elongate rods (30) and end-mounts (31) arranged to move relative to each other. The resilient member is arrangeable in a first configuration and a second configuration such as a twisted configuration. An actuator (20) which is preferably elongate is secured to the resilient member (10) at at least two points, preferably to each of the end mounts (31) of the resilient member (10). The actuator (20) is arranged to force the resilient member (10) into one of or between the two configurations. The resilient member (10) preferably includes a matrix (40) which preferably surrounds at least a portion of the elongate rods (30) which in a hardened state "locks" the flexible member in its configuration and when in a softened state allows the flexible member (10) to change configuration either by actuation by the actuator (20) or due to the resilience of the resilient member (10).
