There is described a formulation comprising a foamable gelling agent (such as alginate, carageenan or carboxymethylcellulose gels) and a slow-release precipitant therefor. The precipitant is combined with the gelling agent during foaming and stabilises the foamed form of the gelling agent. Suitable precipitants include calcium salts such as calcium citrate and calcium chloride, or aluminium salts such as aluminium chloride. The increased stability of the foam facilitates sterilisation thereof. Further improvements can be obtained by exposing the cured foam to a precipitant applied externally, optionally washing, and then drying the foam. The foam of the present invention is suitable for medical or veterinary use and can include active ingredients for delivery to, for example, a wound site.

L'invention concerne une formulation renfermant un agent gélifiant moussant (par exemple des gels d'alginate, de carraghénane, ou de carboxyméthylcellulose) et un précipitant à libération prolongée. Ce précipitant, qui est combiné à l'agent gélifiant au cours du moussage, stabilise la forme moussante de cet agent gélifiant, les sels de calcium comme le citrate de calcium et le chlorure de calcium, ou les sels d'aluminium comme le chlorure d'aluminium, constituant des précipitants adéquats. La stabilité améliorée de la mousse facilite sa stérilisation, d'autres améliorations pouvant par ailleurs être apportées par une exposition de cette mousse durcie à un précipitant appliqué extérieurement, puis éventuellement par un lavage et un séchage de cette mousse. La mousse de la présente invention, à usage médical ou vétérinaire, peut en outre renfermer des principes actifs destinés à être administrés sur une plaie, par exemple.
