A water heater including a body and a fuel burner housed within the body at the lower end thereof and a stand upon which the body is supported spaced from the floor. The stand forms a combustion air chamber between the body and the floor. An inlet duct extends upwardly from the combustion air chamber and provides fluid communication between the combustion air chamber and the ambient air from a predetermined height above the combustion air chamber. Alternatively, a removable shroud may be employed which includes an adjustable band adapted to extend substantially about the body of the water heater and between the floor and the body to form a combustion air chamber therebetween.
