A method for encouraging growth of plants, in particular turf, consisting of covering the surface of soil with a reusable lightweight cover which is breathable and permits the passage of light and moisture. The light is permitted to pass through the cover, having a wavelength of between about 475 and 575 nanometers. Wavelengths below and above this are substantially prevented from passing through the cover. The cover may be applied before the onset of winter, and removed the following spring when the minimum daily temperature exceeds 0°C.
