A wireless communications device, operating over frequencies allocated to Personal Communications Services (100), use Global Positioning System technology (102) to determine the subscriber's exact location on a periodic basis. The device sends the location information to a database (118) for storage and subsequent retrieval by a Geographical Information System software application (114). The GIS converts the location information represented by a latitude/longitude combination to a user-friendly classification of a block, street, city, etc. The user-friendly classification of the subscriber's location is then automatically communicated to emergency services or designated contact (124), if an emergency button (122) has been activated on the device. Alternatively, the device responds to on-demand inquiries on the subscriber's location via a computer link or a computerized voice processing equipment (126), such as a Voice Response Unit (VRU).
L'invention concerne un système de communications hertziennes utilisant des fréquences attribuées aux services de communications personnelles (PCS) (100) ainsi que les moyens techniques du système mondial de radio-repérage (GPS) (102), pour déterminer l'emplacement exact d'un abonné sur une base périodique. Le système transmet les données d'emplacement à une base de données (118), pour mémorisation et extraction ultérieure par une application de logiciel d'un système d'information géographique (GIS) (114). Le GIS convertit les données d'emplacement représentées par une combinaison latitude/longitude en une identification facilement utilisable reposant sur des indications telles que les pavés de maison, la rue, la ville etc. Cette indication est facilement utilisable de l'emplacement d'abonnés et ensuite automatiquement transmise au service d'urgence ou à un contact spécifié (124), pour autant qu'une touche d'urgence (122) ait été activée sur le système. Selon une variante, le système répond à la demande aux recherches concernant l'emplacement d'abonnés par l'intermédiaire d'une liaison informatique ou d'un dispositif de traitement vocal informatique (126), comme par exemple l'unité de réponse vocale (VRU).
