Non-linear effects in an optical fiber used for communicating AM signals at high power levels are reduced by increasing the linewidth of the pump laser output signal. A laser cavity is provided for outputting an optical signal having a longitudinal mode. An active medium is pumped with a pump laser to provide a source of spontaneous emission at or near the lasing wavelength of the laser cavity. The laser cavity is pumped with the pump laser while injecting spontaneous emission from the source into the laser cavity to increase the linewidth of the mode. In one preferred embodiment the signal from the laser cavity is outputted to a first port of an optical circulator. The source of spontaneous emission has an output coupled to a second port of the circulator. The spontaneous emissions are injected into the cavity via the first port of the circulator.
On peut atténuer les effets non linéaires dans une fibre optique utilisée pour transmettre des signaux AM à des niveaux de puissance élevés en élargissant la raie du signal de sortie du laser de pompage. Le système comporte une cavité laser qui émet un signal lumineux à mode longitudinal. Un milieu actif est pompé par un laser pour servir de source d'émission spontanée à la longueur d'onde laser de la cavité ou au voisinage de cette longueur d'onde. La cavité laser est pompée par le laser de pompage en même temps que les émissions spontanées de la source sont introduites dans la cavité pour élargir la raie du mode. Dans une concrétisation privilégiée de l'invention, le signal de sortie de la cavité laser est transmis à un premier port d'un circulateur optique. La source des émissions spontanées a une sortie couplée à un second port du circulateur. Les émissions spontanées sont injectées dans la cavité via le premier port du circulateur.
