Abstract A press roll for dewatering a web of paper in a paper-making machine is arranged with the median axes of the press roll and of the mating roll lieing in a pressing plane whose position departs from the vertical. At least one of the two rolls is designed in the form of a "shoe roll", having a rotatable metallic roll casing, a stationary yoke extending through the roll casing adjacent to the roll gap, and a shoe to transmit the pressing force from the yoke to the roll casing. Between the yoke and the shoe there is a pressure chamber receiving hydraulic liquid for pressing the shoe against the roll casing. The yoke is designed in the form of a hollow body. The dimensions and the materials of the roll casing and/or the degree of filling of the intermediate space between the yoke and the roll casing with a liquid are so selected in relation to each other that, in a plane perpendicular to the pressing plane, flexure owing to the inherent weight of the roll casing and yoke (including the shoe) are at least approximately equal to each other.
