There is a stepper motor that has a control system that utilizes both a closed and open loop control. Uniquely, the closed loop operates from zero to about 300 degrees of a motor shaft rotation, and the open loop control operates from about 300 to 360 degrees of the shaft rotation. A position sensor (16), which is connected to the shaft (14), has a sensing range where the position sensor senses the shaft position, and a dead zone range where the position sensor does not work. There is a determining means (46), connected to the position sensor, for determining if a next position of the shaft is going to be in the sensing range or the dead zone range. There is also a sensing control means (48), also referred to as the closed loop control process, responsive to the determining means, for controlling the stepper motor when the shaft is to be moved within the sensing range. Then there is a dead zone control means (50), also referred to as the open loop control process, responsive to the determining means, for controlling the stepper motor when the shaft is to be moved into the dead zone range. 17
