A surgical instrument adapted for stapling and cutting tissue in a highly controlled manner is provided. The instrument comprises a frame with a handle at a proximal end and an end-effector at a distal end. The end-effector has a U-shaped supporting structure and receives a cartridge module containing a cartridge housing containing a plurality of surgical fasteners and a knife, both of which are selectively actuated by a firing mechanism. The cartridge module includes an anvil shaped for engagement with the surgical fasteners and knife to facilitate cutting and stapling. The cartridge housing and anvil are moveable relative to each other. The instrument includes a retainer for preventing undesired movement of the cartridge housing towards the anvil.
