The invention provides methods and compositions for increasing Na ion transport and/or epithelial fluid transport in a vertebrate by administering an effective amount of haptoglobin or haptoglobin and hemoglobin. The invention also provides a new therapeutic approach for treating disorders associated with insufficient epithelial Na ion and/or fluid transport, the use of an effective amount of haptoglobin, or haptoglobin and hemoglobin in the preparation of medicament for increasing epithelial Na ion transport in a vertebrate as well as a method of screening a candidate compound for its ability to modulate haptoglobin or haptoglobin and hemoglobin stimulation of epithelial Na ion transport.
L'invention concerne des méthodes et des compositions permettant d'accroître le transport d'ions Na et/ou le transport de fluide épithélial chez un vertébré par l'administration d'une quantité efficace d'haptoglobine, ou d'haptoglobine et d'hémoglobine. Cette invention concerne également une nouvelle approche thérapeutique pour traiter des troubles associés à un transport insuffisant d'ions Na épithéliaux et/ou de fluide épithélial, l'utilisation d'une quantité efficace d'haptoglobine, ou d'haptoglobine et d'hémoglobine, dans la préparation d'un médicament destiné à accroître le transport d'ions Na épithéliaux chez un vertébré ainsi qu'une méthode de criblage d'un composé candidat pour identifier la capacité de ce dernier à moduler la stimulation d'haptoglobine, ou d'haptoglobine et d'hémoglobine, du transport d'ions Na épithéliaux.
