A method and system for generating authority scores and hub scores to a plurality of linked documents is provided. The method assigns an authority score to a document based on the discounted rewards that can be received on the predecessors of the document. The method assigns a hub score to a document based on the discounted rewards that can be received on the immediate successors of the document. The method can be directly computed from a Markov chain that is not necessarily ergodic. The method and system can be used to battle content spam and link spam, speed up convergence, personalize scores, and compute query-dependent ranking.
