2062782 9112754 PCTABS00007 A fitted mattress cover (10) for enveloping the exposed surfaces of a mattress (14) constructed to minimize the shifting of the cover (10) relative to the mattress (14). The cover (10) includes a top panel (12) for fitting in overlying relationship to the mattress top surface and a peripheral skirt (16) depending from the peripheral edge of the top panel (12) for fitting an overlying relationship to the mattress sides and ends. The depending skirt (16) includes a layer of fabric material (22) and a plurality of parallel, spaced-apart elastic cords (18) stitched into the skirt fabric (22) to gather the fabric material (22) into folds perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the elastic cords (18). Also, a method of making the cover (10) includes forming a panel of fabric material for the top panel (12), forming a flat layer of fabric material (22) for the skirt (16), longitudinally straining a plurality of parallel spaced-apart elastic cords (18), concurrently stitching the cords into the flat layer of fabric material (22), allowing the elastic cords (18) to relax forming gathers in the layer of skirt material (22) with the axis of the folds of the gathers perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the cords (18).
