A jig for precisely positioning a mark on a work piece underneath with the axis of rotation of a drill press chuck. The jig is comprised of a chuck attachment yoke, a vertical joining member and a lower cursor foot. The upper attachment yoke includes magnetic arms that affix tangentially onto the outer cylindrical surface of the tool chuck. The lower foot member includes a vertical sighting cursor having a crosshair on its lower surface. The vertical joining member's upper portion is adjustably affixed to the attachment yoke and its lower end is adjustably affixed to the cursor foot, thereby enabling the sighting cursor's optical axis to be made coincident with the chuck's axis of rotation. Another embodiment is disclosed that includes a detachable portion of the cursor foot having a removable optical cursor that can be replaced with a metal punch. This subassembly of the alignment jig is used to precisely punch an indentation at the desired mark location and thereby prevent skating of the drill point.
