T 4294 A B S T R A C T PREPARATION OF ALKYL METHACRYLATE MONOMERS FOR ANIONIC POLYMERIZATION A process is disclosed for treatment of alkyl methacrylate monomers for subsequent polymerization by an anionic initiator to produce a polymer with a molecular weight distribution between 1.20 and 1.01. The process involves treatment of the monomer with an aluminum hydrocarbyl or boron hydrocarbyl in quantities which permit polymerization in the presence of the by-products of the reaction between the impurities and the aluminum hydrocarbyl or boron hydrocarbyl.
